Self Introduction

 Subject: Self Introduction

Dear Professor Blackstone,

I hope you are having a great day. My name is Koong Kok How, and I am a Year 1 Civil Engineering student at SIT. The purpose of this email is to reach out to you to introduce myself and to share my goals for this module.

My interest in engineering stems from my father, who was an engineer. As a child, I was fascinated by architecture and building structures. This fascination inspired me to pursue a diploma in green building and sustainability at Temasek Polytechnic. However, after gaining a year of industry experience, I recognized that my diploma was somewhat specialized. Hence, I decided to pursue a civil engineering degree here at SIT to expand my knowledge and explore more opportunities within the built environment sector.

When it comes to communication, I believe my strength lies in active listening and providing thoughtful feedback. During group discussions or collaborative projects, I try to fully understand others’ perspectives and contribute constructive input that fosters productive conversations. On the other hand, my weakness is a lack of confidence in public speaking. I often feel stressed and tend to overthink, which sometimes makes it challenging for me to articulate my thoughts clearly in front of an audience.

For this module, my goal is to first improve my public speaking skills and gain greater confidence in presenting ideas effectively. Secondly, I aim to improve my writing proficiency, with a focus on both technical and professional communication, to ensure I can articulate ideas with precision and clarity.

I believe what sets me apart from others is my attention to detail. I make it a point to consistently keep track of tasks, ensuring that all assignments and assessments are thoroughly prepared and executed to the best of my ability.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter, and I look forward to learning and growing through this module.

Best regards,

Koong Kok How

  1. Hi Kok How,

Regarding your self introduction letter, I can sense the passion you have for Civil Engineering and I got to know you more personally which is great! Don't fret as public speaking is no easy task as I myself experience difficulty in that aspect too.

Great letter, and speak up more in class.

    Best Regards
    Lennon

  2. Greetings Kok how,

With regard to your letter, I have several pointers that I believe will elevate it to the next level. Please take my pointers with a pinch of salt as everyone has a different writing style, and perhaps what I share may not be best suited for you.

Your first paragraph was very authentic, speaking highly of your father as well as what inspired you to pursue this course of study. However, I believe that the second half was counter argumentative as it did not support your previous statement.

As for your second paragraph, I believe you kept it short and sweet, explaining your strengths and weaknesses. I hope that through this module, you will be able to achieve your goals and overcome your weaknesses.

For your last paragraph, perhaps you could go more in-depth and list more examples as to what sets you apart as an individual. Everyone is unique in their own ways and I believe you have more to share about yourself.

Nonetheless, very impressive writing. All the best with this module!

    Best regards,
    Jeremiah

    1. Dear Jeremiah,

Thank you for taking the time to ready my letter and I appreciate the feedback that you have pointed out to improve it. Regarding the second half of the first paragraph, I understand how it might seem counter argumentative and I will try to work on aligning my thoughts better to maintain the consistency throughout the paragraph.

Once again, I appreciate your feedback and wish you all the best in this module as well!

      Best regards,
      Kok How
